You sure can. That's exactly the way I use them. The Right one will be the Active bud.

The left only controls volume, which you can change via phone if needed. If you leave the left one in the case, it will not connect to the phone while you are using the right one.

So when ur next call comes in while driving u have to find a way to turn it back on and drive at the same time. This is not the ear bud for driving.
