• No you don't have to be by your phone. Just make sure your Bluetooth on your phone is on and when you get back and the tracker will sync with your phone.

• Yeah, I got the UP2 and it does need an up to date smartphone to view all the info. You do not need the phone until you want to check on your progress, but make sure to read the specs so your phone has the proper versions of everything to be supported.

• If you do not have a jawbone fitness tracker such as any of their up products, than yes you need to carry your phone on you to track your steps. However other features such as water and food intake you can enter that on your own. If what you are eating has a barcode you can use your phone to scan the barcode and get pretty accurate measures of the nutritional facts.
