“Once the lock is set up does it need WiFi and and internet connection to function? My understanding is that it works with Bluetooth to sense your near the outside of the door.”

No it does not need wifi. There is an extra module that you can buy that makes it work with wifi and remotely

It does not require wifi and will work with bluetooth only out of the box. The gateway adds the ability to remotely lock/unlock without issuing eKeys.

That is correct. It is connected to you phone via Bluetooth. If you lose the power to your house, you lock will still unlock when in range of you paired phone.

You only need Bluetooth, you can purchase an add on bridge to be able to use wifi from anywhere to open or close the lock
