• It depends the on the symptoms, if it simply slowed to a crawl it is probably the CPU, if it won't start up, chances are, that is a a problem with the hard drive.

• The question would be, how it seems to be breaking? It could be the HDD or the operating system or motherboard What did the laptop do to consider it broken?.
