Yes, you can upgrade the hard drive to an SSD, however you'll either need to find a program which allows the transfer of Windows 8.1 and move it to the new drive, OR do a clean installation of Windows 8.1 using an ISO or DVD (make sure you obtain the product code before you replace it.. just in case the BIOS does not communicate). You can use a program called "Magic Jelly Bean" to find the product code for Windows 8.1 Core. Both slots are currently being used, looks like there is dual 4GB memory sticks in there. You can remove them and replace it with dual 8GB memory sticks to get to 16GB.
