• A:Answer All over-the-range microwaves have less cooking power than what is available on countertop units. Codes and regulations dictate the maximum amperage (power) an appliance can draw from a standard 120 VAC circuit. In a countertop unit this can all be allocated to cooking. An over-the-range unit must also have an exhaust fan, and usually lighting, for the range. Slightly less cooking power, compared to a countertop unit, is available. Look for the power rating in the specifications. This LG is rated 1050 watts. That is quite good for an over-the-range unit. Similarly sized countertop units are 1200 to 1250 watts. I've had this unit for several months and it cooks no slower than the GE unit it replaced. However, it does not cook as fast as the countertop unit I had in my previous home.
