The perception of how loud or how quiet something is is very subjective.There are several factors that may influence how loud the LG SN6Y 3.1 Channel High Res Audio Sound Bar with DTS Virtual:X is such as the size of your room, how far from the system you will be sitting, how loud those ambient sounds that you mentioned like a mower, kids or how far your dishwasher or washer are from the Soundbar and how loud they are. As you are aware from your own experiences, the perception of loudness diminshes with increasing distance. The loudness can also be affected by how much furniture you have in the room, whether it is carpeted or not and whether you have drapes that absorb the sound and what type of walls you have...^IFV
