• You do need HDMI cables for the best picture. However, you don't need to buy the ultra fancy expensive ones. Make sure they are HDMI 2 or higher compliant. My HDMI cables are moderately priced ones from 6 or 7 years ago and I have no issue. If I was to also get a 4K-ready Blu Ray, I would probably upgrade my cables then.

• Mine is hooked up to directv with a hdmi cable. Picture is perfect.
