“LG user guide says nothing about HOW ear buds retract. Photos make it look like they retract internally. Is this a spring, with a retract button? Seems any tension would pull buds out of ear, and any tiny spring would be short lived.”

You pull down slightly on the cord and release. It's kind of works like a roll up window shade where you have to pull down slightly to make it roll up.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The retract works fine. I never retracts unless i want it to and it durable. I have small children and they always grab at full strength on the earpiece, hasn't pop yet.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.When finished and want them to retract, you gently pull out just a little and they retract internally by a spring loaded reel. Works like a dream. When you pull them out they lock in place and when finished pull them out just a little bit and they reel back in.
