in my opinion there is a speaker button on the device. So in other words if you hit the button by mistake and you don't want everyone to hear with whom you are talking to you are busted. I am not sure about the range on the 820 model but I can tell you the range on the 820S model sucks. I couldn't walk away from my phone ( Galaxy 8) without it losing a signal. I couldn't even put the phone in my pocket ( never had that problem before and to tell you this was my 6th or 7th retractable blue tooth headset by LG. Oh! I can't remember if the 820 model has buttons on each side of the device to retract the ear pieces. This set is not worth the money I am gonna use it as a back up . I just ordered the Tone Infinim from another company. Also by LG. Hoe this answer helps, if not let me know!!!1 Take care
