A:Answer I'm not quite sure if I understand the question correctly but you can use both front and/or rear elevation speakers, or none. I think what it means by assignable is which speakers will be powered by the Marantz and which by an external amplifier because this receiver powers 9 channels. The setup is step by step, detailed and easy to follow. During setup it will ask which speakers you have before calibration. Hope this helps.
