From what AT&T explained, if LTE stays on the screen next to the cellular signal icon at the top of your screen, then it's using HD voice, which requires the LTE data. It is not HD voice if it changes to 4G. You'll need to also check with AT&T to see if it is available in your area. As of right now, Gotham City (Ok, the St. Louis, Missouri area,) does not have HD voice available. Make sure you have LTE cellular data on for both calls and data to ensure you're getting HD quality. If you find you're getting dropped calls, or calls that sound funny, you probably don't have HD calling available and turning LTE data off for calls will improve these conditions.

I've seen that same logo across phones including unlocked phones so it isn't verizon-specific. In general, the clarity of the other person's voice is usually obvious when in an HD call. It sounds better than a standard call. Another way you could test if HD voice is working is to find a friend or person with a phone that knows their HD voice is working. If you call them, and their phone does not show HD voice, then your phone is not set up to support it or the ATT and whatever provider the other person is on aren't handling HD voice properly. I believe HD voice has to be supported on both sides of the conversation to work so if a friend normally sees HD voice on their calls, but when you call they don't, then your phone would likely need to have some settings changed.
