“Do I need to create a password in the Netgear product in order to protect my computer's data or does it use my router's password? Is this plug & play or do I have to change its settings? I need to boost the signal from my existing router/modem.”

Highly recommended. Remember, anybody can look up your product's DEFAULT PASSWORD for your device and gain access to it. Learned this from YOU TUBE.
