A:Answer Most ISPs, including AT&T, use a combination modem/router. This means that it does the job of the modem AND router. In order to use an outside router, which you should ALWAYS do, you'll need to have the ISP modem/router turned into pass-through mode so that you are NOT using the wifi capabilities of their device. Instead, you'll be using the wifi capabilities of the router you buy and ALL security and controls will come exclusively from the new router, not the modem/router from your ISP. There is a HUGE improvement in performance, speed and latency using your own router vs ANY ISP equipment. It just takes a few more minutes and patience initially learning how to set it up if you are unfamiliar how to do it. It's worth the effort though, I promise.
