“I don't know what the 'ports' mean, but my new isp is stating I will need a 4 port router for connection. Does this have 4 ports? And built in modem or does that need purchased separately?”

You will still need a modem.And it has 4 ports for hard wired ethernet. But it is capable of a large number of WIFI connections.
