- Answer The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is a versatile lens that works well for both long shots and closer ones. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 4.6 ft. so it will be necessary to stand back from your subject by at least that distance when focusing - but you can then zoom in to make up for the added distance. If you are looking for a lens specifically for shooting portraits then consider a fixed focal length lens (prime) like the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Standard Lens which has a minimum focus distance of 0.98 ft. . A prime lens will not zoom to bring objects closer, but it will offer better low light performance and more control over how much background blur (bokeh) is in your shots.

- Answer The lens is compatible with all Nikons with the f mount. The D3200 is an f mount just as all the full frames that Nikon offers. The only cameras that are not compatible are the Nikon 1 series. I would add this tidbit though about the lens. I use a D3300 and when I take a picture the image just doesn't look quite right at the low end of the zoom. The picture is sharp and in focus, bokeh is present, but it looks off. The lowest mm I use is 65mm.
