The D3100 will do all of that. The difference is that with a DSLR, the quality is so much better and there is no delay when you take a shot. With the coolpix, you will have the shutter lag once you press the button, so you lose something when the shot actually happens.

With a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera (DSLR), a reflex mirror is used to reflect light entering the lens upward into the camera finder. At the finder, another set of mirrors, or a prism, redirects the light through another lens group for viewing the image through the view finder.

DSLR's tend to take better pictures due to their larger sensors and higher quality optics, but they are generally more complicated to use and bulkier. Also, DSLR's typically do not come with long zoom lenses, so you'd probably have to buy a second longer zoom at additional cost. That said, the D3100 has made strides in the ease of use department. If size and budget is more important, the Coolpix S8100 is an excellent choice. Nikon's had some issues with picture quality on their Coolpix cameras in the past, but their latest models seem to be reversing that trend. The only problem is that you may find sports and action shots difficult, as no point and shoot can begin to touch the speed of a DSLR.
