Basically, the D3100 will continue to take pictures at 3 frames per second until you stop pressing the shutter release. Now in reality you are limited by the battery in the camera. As the battery charge gets weaker the process slows down considerably ( 2-1.5 fps). You are also limited by you your memory card capacity. On the plus side if you buy an external flash unit like the SB-900 you can raise you frames per second to around 4 fps.
