A:Answer Nikkor VR (Vibration Reduction) lenses contain a free floating module designed to counter the effects of camera movement during shooting. This unit is electronic and mobile, and when the shutter release is pressed halfway down, it will become active and center itself in the lens. This shift is visible in the viewfinder. When viewing your subject in the viewfinder, press the shutter release halfway, and you can watch the image shift slightly. This is perfectly normal operation.
Along with this slight image shift, if it is quiet enough, you may hear a soft humming sound or clicking sound coming from the lens. This is the sound of the active VR Unit and this will remain active while the shutter release button is pressed halfway, and then for a few seconds after the button is let go.
