• Yes, it does have to be plugged in but it charges fast!

• You have to be plugged in to charge the joy cons. The cord is 5 feet.

• The controllers plug in/connect to the charger, and there is a USB-C at the top of the controller. I am not sure if the controller/charging station a charge or holds a battery inside though, sorry!
