“The Olympus DS-40 was recommended to me but it is discontinued. Will this model be an equal substitute? I need a digital recorder that can be downloaded to my computer and have a high degree of clarity in a large room with multiple speakers.”

I suggest looking at the DM-420, this was a more direct replacement. Although the WS-700M is an excellent recorder.
