Connecting your TV to the receiver will not mute the TV's speakers. You can either listen through the TV or turn the TV's volume down and listen through the receiver.

Any receiver (as long as your current TV supports these outputs) with ARC (if using a single HDMI to/from the receiver) or optical inputs will do. This one just happens to be a quality receiver for the price you are paying.
