• Connecting your TV to the receiver will not mute the TV's speakers. You can either listen through the TV or turn the TV's volume down and listen through the receiver.

• No. if you route your cable to your TV and then use audio out (optical or hdmi) from TV to the receiver, you can use either TV or receiver.

• No. You don't need to use this particular receiver to hear the TV sound. Any receiver (as long as your current TV supports these outputs) with ARC (if using a single HDMI to/from the receiver) or optical inputs will do. This one just happens to be a quality receiver for the price you are paying.

• No you don't...but I have it hooked to my TV for surround sound and outside sound.
