I don't know with certainty regarding your specific set up but most receivers and amplifiers have self protection that will shut down a component that is over heating. If your receiver has adequate ventilation you may have a defective transformer. Excessive heat is difficult to define but you can usually tell when a component shuts down if it's temperature is high. If it "seems" hot, it probably is.
