Bad HDMI Port, Lousy Support Help

Our ONKYO ran for about 6 months, connected to an Epson projector via HDMI, then suddenly the Epson could not find the signal. I first spoke with an ONKYO customer support rep who convinced me my HDMI cable was no longer completing the handshake with the Epson. The cable is only 14 feet, so not a very long run, but following the rep's suggestion, I invested in a J-Tech transmitter and receiver to send the signal over ethernet with two short 3' HDMI cables on either end. Still no signal. So I went and bought a new television so that I could get it close enough to the ONKYO to connect with just a 3 foot HDMI cable. Still no signal. I just got off the line with "support," and they connected me with a service center in New York. (I live in Delaware and the rep was geographically challenged, as he first said the nearest repair center was in Illinois.) I just got off the phone with assistance at this repair center, and it turns out I have to send the receiver in at my expense, then wait for two weeks or so for a repair. What a runaround! I have now heard that ONKYOs are notorious for bad HDMI ports, so if you value your time and want to avoid frustration and going without a receiver, by all means, BUY ANOTHER BRAND.

This was my first Onkyo receiver. It is replacing a nice Pioneer that just didn't provide ARC capability which I now need to have due to wiring limitations with a new smart TV I acquired. Since this receiver was not purchased for our main TV-watching area in the basement, this one was perfect for our budget and upstairs family room. It doesn't have A/B speaker configuration but we were able to deal with that. We utilize the 5.1 system this Onkyo provides for this small area and it provides plenty of power to fill up the house with sound. The subwoofer thumps as well. No complaints. Setup was easy, and I have heard nothing but good things about Onkyo in general. Lot of bang for the buck for this model if you don't need all the bells and whistles of a true theater surround system. Bluetooth connectivity is also available but distance was more limited than most other devices I have used. This receiver was limited to around 15' range until a brand new Samsung device started cutting out audio. That Samsung device had no issues in connecting to other BT speakers at least 40-ft away. Not a huge deal in our case but an observation. Great job, Onkyo.

      Sounds great with minor issues

I have had the receiver for about one week and so far it sounds good through my two Elac Debut 2.0 bookshelf speakers. Sound is crisp and clean without any noticeable distortion during all genres of music and movies/TV. I have an echo dot connected to CD in and it sounds good and the FM/AM stereo sounds good as well. Next I am going to use a HDMI input for some HiRes audio playing from my Macbook Pro. The only Issue I have had is I cannot hook any devices to the hdmi ports on the receiver and send video to my Samsung tv. Lucky for me I only use an xbox one, hdmi plug to my iphone, and the built in smart tv apps so I just have everything plugged into the tv like I did prior to the receiver with an HDMI Arc cord running to the receiver for TV Audio out. I can see where this would be a real pain if you have more hdmi ports than your TV can hold.

I bought this receiver because it has the highest wattage per channel for the money, and has Bluetooth. I do not like that the speaker outputs are a mix of banana and push-pin, This should have been all banana. The push connectors won't take more than 16 AWG wire. I also did not like the F-connector for the FM radio; this won't connect to coax cable without an adaptor that Best Buy doesn't sell. The next receiver step up connects to coax. The cheap connectors are my only regret in this purchase, though the typical setup is one time. The room equalizer auto-setup is another nice feature. Note that you must have an active HDMI input for the HDMI output to work, and this is needed for setup. The manual doesn't tell you this.

I picked this up to replace an older Onkyo 5.1 reciever that did not have any of the modern features such as HDMI in or out, blue tooth, arch as well as a LFE out. I seen this unit at Best Buy and was happy to see that it offered all of the connections I needed. I was also happy it had two LFE outputs because I am running two subwoofers and I did not want to use a y splitter. So far I have really been enjoying this unit. Setup was fast and easy and the auto setup was practically spot on when compared to my own measurements. The sound quality is clean and clear, and it does offer enough watts to run all of my speakers with out having to come anywhere close to maxing out the unit. I am really happy this unit runs very cool compared to my older unit even after watching multiple movies or long periods of music listening. It also sounds terrific for playing games.

      Good Value, but...

I'm limited in my choices of home theater equipment by the need for dual subwoofer jacks, so there were only two available at my store to choose from, and I'm not a great fan of Denon. You get a lot for your money with this receiver; the only real drawback is that you can't manually select a surround field - it detects whatever is available with the content and gives you only those as options. For some reason, the "Dolby Digital" processor is faulty: I've got my (small also Onkyo) center speaker cranked to maximum but there's barely any center input. My preferred default setting is "Dolby PLII Music," but that's apparently not an option on Netflix, because the receiver won't offer it up. It's a minor problem, but we watch a lot on Netflix. I just throw it onto five channel stereo and it's OK.

I love it loud with no distortion. I have been able to do just that. I paired this receiver with 2 Onkyo SKF-4800 2-Way Bass Reflex Floor-standing Speakers and my neighbors just love it. Maybe not. I love the bluetooth and I just discovered Pandora Premium. My pool area is now complete. The HDMI TV works well as does everything else including my dad's old Pioneer turntable. Old school but new technology. Kick it, that is what I do. Thank you and please come again.

Needed to replace my older Panasonic receiver and started to comparison shop for a newer model. This Onyko Receiver is just what I was looking for my audio needs. Quick guide is fairly basic, but do advise to download the complete manual from the website. So far the stereo part of the receiver works great - good clarity once you find the right location for the FM antenna, Have yet to try the DVD player, but have a feeling should have no issues as long as the connections are correct. Like the idea of having the ability to use just front facing speakers, as well as, setting up surround sound speakers. Great basic receiver for my needs.
