What you are looking for is a feature called standby pass through in which the receiver can pass hdmi signal when the receiver is off. It is a nice feature for when it’s late at night and you don’t want to disturb the family - the tv can then output the audio.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You could run the HDMI directly from your cable box or your Blu-ray player right to your television and then run an optical out cable from your Blu-ray or cable box into your receiver. That is what I do, that way you can just watch the television without the receiver on when I necessary, or turn the receiver on and receive the sound from the optical cable for the theater experience.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Why would you watch TV without the receiver? That is the job of the receiver. I assume you have a home theater speaker system right? Once you put the receiver in control you cannot separate it from one device or another. If you don't have a home theater speaker system then the receiver really doesn't have a purpose. Now if DirecTV ever comes out with a box that has more than one HDMI "out" you can do it that way but I don't see that happening.
