Simply put, lines of resolution. Think of an iPhone screen.... 720 would be like a standard screen, 1080 would be like a retina display. a higher density of pixels so essentially you could sit closer without starting to see the individual pixels. Not a major issue on smaller screens like this though, but as the screen gets larger and more area to cover then it can make a difference.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.720p means 720 horizontal lines on the screen. 1080p means 1080 horizontal lines on the screen. P means progressive scan (as opposed to interlaced scan). Large TVs need 1080p for a good picture. Smaller TVs (32 inch and less) only need 720p.
