“Is the lifter and other EHS cables absolutely required for the CS510 for use with the Cisco IP Phone 7942? Can the CS510 headset still function without them?”

A handset lifter or EHS cable is not required to use your headset, however without these accessories you will not be able to answer or end calls from your headset and you will need to manage them from the phone itself.
