• Yes, it is. That is why I bought it as well. I needed a better than wifi connection and this took care of it.

• It is compatible with Macbooks across the board. It's actually designed with them in mind. As for the Chromecast question: it will NOT work with the new Chromecast w/ Android TV. That device requires a dongle that supplies power AND ethernet to use ethernet.
