It will work in the garage. I have mine mounted in the garage with no issues.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No, It does not need to be outdoors. I installed mine in the basement in the same location as the old unit. Easy install and worked right away. It does have to be able to get wifi at the location. I checked that with an ipad and laptop first and had a strong signal there.
