“Since the amplifier is in only one of the speakers, I assume that they have to be manually connected (wired) to each other, correct? I would prefer if each had its own power cable and could be plugged in individually, but I am assuming they cannot.”

You are correct, the passive speaker must be manually connected to the powered speaker.

Speaker wire connects the amp speaker to the other speaker. So only one speaker has an amp and plugs into the wall, and the other speaker must be manually connected to the amp with speaker wire.
