Q: QuestionI have replaced my GE water filter in my refrigerator with the same water filter - a XWFE filter cartilage. A ERR message shows and water is not working. I removed the new filter and reinstalled, but it still shows ERR.

If the display on the refrigerator is showing ERR, this could be an indication of a bad or damaged filter, the wrong filter having been installed or the installation of a non-GE filter. We recommend buying a genuine GE replacement filter and see if your issue is resolved. If the issue continues, please call GE Appliances service at 1-800-432-2737 to schedule a service appointment as there may be an issue with your refrigerator. While both the MSWF and XWFE filters are designed to provide excellent filtration and high quality water for you, they do have some differences and are not interchangeable. Your particular refrigerator model will have a specific filter it’s compatible with. If it might be useful, we have a tool on our GE Appliances parts website that would help you find the right filter for your refrigerator; if you’d like to use that, you can go to our parts website, click the ‘Water Filters’ drop down and select the ‘Filter Finder’.
