“Does the ring app always need to be open on my phone to get notifications?”

No I get notifications as soon as motion is detected. A wasp said hello one day just buzzing around in front of my camera. LOL

No... you can enable notifications and you will be notified of Motion at your door or if someone rings the doorbell.

No , update your notification setting..we had problems not revving notifications at first and had to change the settings
