It has a very wide field of vision. Anywhere from 3 to 5 feet should work

I installed the Ring Doorbell 2 in the same location without creating an additional hole to move the doorbell higher. The location is fine. The Ring video actually has a pretty wide field of view, both horizontally and vertically, so it is more than enough to catch people's faces while they are standing at the door.
