The Roku Ultra remote is RF. You don't have to point it at the tv or Roku Ultra device.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I don't think it uses IR or RF. If I'm not mistaken, it uses the wifi signal to communicate with the base unit. That's how the remote is able to work even though it doesn't have line of sight to the base.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I'm not sure if it's IR or RF, it doesn't have the red light in the end of it, but the remote is able to turn the TV on and off & control the sound of the TV while I am using the Roku so there isn't a need for any other remote
