I downloaded the App(Beta) and I did not need the cable. I even like that you can watch on other devices also.

My understanding is that the Xfinity app only works if you have Comcast in your house. To save money, you could pay for only the apps you watch a lot and ditch cable.

You need internet. Depending on the number of WiFi users in your house, 100-200 meg download speed is plenty. For TV providers, look at YoutubeTV, $49.99 per month, 7 day free trial. Switch your phone to OOMA basic, not premium. Or go mobile only.
