The grill heat element is like the elements in the electric ovens. It works very well with the plate, it is a little slower in cooking time then a toaster oven. As far as the wattage, that is something that I was a little concerned with myself, but I have not noticed any difference in the power and the time. It seems to heat and cook food just as well as the higher wattage microwaved.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. When just using the microwave, it is essentially cool. Like it says in the manual, it gets a bit hot with the broiler grill going. Should not catch anything on fire but could melt sensitive plastic, etc.. We take things off when grilling just to be sure. Metal objects would not be an issue, just allow most of the surface to be open so it can naturally cool. We do not touch the top either although I doubt you would get a burn from it. Lets say it would be quite uncomfortable to keep your hand there. Something like touching an oven door but less. The grill is a good feature. It operates off coils just like a normal oven broiler.
