This is an excellent question. They go back a good 6-8 inches. I had to notch out our cabinets above the fridge to get it to fit due to this. The realistic height of this fridge is really the height of the hinges (not the top of the fridge), unless you don't have a cabinet above it. And if you don't, why would you care about the height? This is something that tricked me. When they went to slide it in, it didn't fit. I didn't think the hinges went back as far as they do. Good question!
