The variable speed motor means that it operates at different levels depending on demand, so the sound level varies, as well. The maximum sound level should be no more than 45 decibels, which is about the equivalent of a quiet conversation at home, though it would typically be much quieter when operating at lower speeds. Keep in mind that noises a refrigerator can make may be related to other parts, as well, such as the ice maker.
