Hello Retiredteacher, The 55Q60T has an Ethernet port where you can hard wire the TV to your Modem. If you are looking for a wireless solution, you will have to get a router either from you service provider or Best Buy. Yes you can watch TV without a television provider via streaming services. Yes you need a router. The TV needs an internet connection to stream video. Recommend contacting your local cable company. You can use your phone as a hot spot for your Smart TV, however you will use up your data rather quickly.
