it optional. If you don't want to use a soda stream canister, you don't have to. However, you can still use plain water even though the soda stream is installed. theres a lever to switch between water and sparkling. Chef collection has this feature. If this feature is not for you, theres a another samsung refrigerator with similar door feature without soda stream.
