The main differences are: a slide in has unfinished sides that are plain black metal and it has no raised piece on the back edge of the unit. You could put on stainless or aluminum sides but a free standing has that already. P.S. It's a great unit.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. So I'm not an expert by any means. But I did replace the normal range with all the dials on the back with this slide in range. There was really no problem getting it in to the slot. I did have a minor issue with there being a gap between wall and range but that might be because I had a new gas line run (old was electric). We did have to find the original paint and fill in the gap left by the old range's control panel. And we do plan on adding a tile backsplash for cleanliness and aesthetic reasons. The only real difference I think in the two is the placement of the controls. To me the slide in has a much classier look. And for some reason I think that what the stove looks like in the kitchen plays a big role in the overall feel. Other than that, I see no difference!!!
