“When I'm using the top portion of the oven and set it to convection bake, the broiler is what is heating the top portion of the oven. Is this how others' ovens are? This burns anything cooked in the top oven.”

It's probably the cooking time that needs to be adjusted in your recipe. Took me a while to realize it cooks so much faster with convection. a 30min cook time might only need 20 min or less. And it's a smaller space than a full size oven so not as long to heat. Try that! I love this oven!
