If you purchase an AT&T branded or T-Mobile branded version of the Galaxy S4 it will be carrier locked to that carrier. You can call the carrier and ask for the unlock code so that it may be used on any gsm carrier(usually you would do this if you were planning on traveling overseas where the roaming charges would be large and you would buy a local sim card for the duration of your trip). They DO NOT have to give you the unlock code. Sometimes you may have to try three or four times to get it from them. There are other options but most will involve paying anywhere from 20 to 35 dollars to have the phone unlocked.

The un-activated phone cost 749.99 dollars the unlock phone cost 799.99 to me I think the unlock phone is the better deal but in the end, its up to you to choose which is more suited for you.
