If any Samsung phone has sharing and bluetooth enabled and comes within <400feet proximity you will get a location. It does give a "ghost" last location. Not likely, but the batteries do eventually die. Going 2+ years and batteries still going strong on the couple I have. If you head to the "last known" location there is an option to ring the device that could give you audio cues. Kidnappers probably know what a smarttag is though and would circumvent the tech. This is more for a lost child but could help with a last known location which narrows the distance and direction for investigators. Situational awareness education would be your best bet to avoid the worst case.

The tag communicates with the Smartthings Find Network via other Samsung phones or nodes. So, it generally works better (updates faster) in high-traffic areas. If your son is abducted and taken somewhere rural, then you'd probably be out of luck.
