I use mine with my Samsung 8 note, so, I would expect it will work with the 9. You can use it as a stand alone phone if you register it as a phone with your your provider (AT&T). Depending on you plan, this may cost you extra. I use mine as a bluetooth connection to my phone, so, I don't know about the quality of the phone calls as a stand alone phone. Anyway, I like mine.
