Great question! The LTE version is able to receive calls and text messages without being connected to a phone. However, you will need to activate service for the watch with the same carrier as your mobile phone. The Bluetooth version is able to receive calls and text messages while it is connect to your phone. This version does not require any service activation with your carrier.
