GPS uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone. If you leave your phone in your house and go for a run, the watch will not notify you of texts/calls until you are in range again. With an unlocked watch, you link it to your carrier's data plan, so your watch essentially mimics your phone, allowing you to receive calls without being connected to your phone.
