Thank you for reaching out with your question, JW. You can set the Gear Fit to turn on the screen automatically every time you twist your arm for reading the time or notifications. However, if you don't like that or find it is too sensative for you, you can turn that feature off and simply use the small button on the side to turn the screen on instead. You will see a brightness button and a minus sign. click on the minus sign and you will be able to put it in sleep mode. It will still track your steps and all that but you won't get notifications. This is good for when sleeping with device so you don't get woken up and screen doesn't turn on.
