Why does this watch specify a carrier? null

Probably because they offer 3g/4g service through at&t. But if you're not with at&t contact your carrier to see if they have the watch and theyll be able to provide you with service for it. I have this watch through verizon and it works great.

It's because the ATT watch has 3G service which means you can use it without your phone. I believe it comes with it's own phone number (but it'll still take your calls when tethered via Bluetooth to your own phone). You'll need to pay a fee on your cell phone bill to use it with cell service. Something like an extra $10/month. I'd be curious to know if you can use as a phone by simply having it connected via Bluetooth. What if you don't want the cell service (where you don't need to your phone connected to the watch), but still want to make calls via the watch? Think of how your car works. No cell service for your car, but you can still make calls through it.
