No activation fee to activate the phone, but there is always a small activation fee when you purchase the phone minutes for a prepay service. I pay a 1.00 fee when I purchase my $30 Verizon monthly prepaid payment plus tax. the total cost is about $33 a month for everything I need - unlimited text and calling nationwide. Service is very good and there are fewer dead zones with verizon service than I find with other services.
